4. Should we read faster?
There are two very different types of reading: reading for pleasure, and reading for learning. They are as different as a walk in the park is from a drive to work. Reading for pleasure is meant to be enjoyed. The word choice and rhythms , the ideas and imagery; these are meant to be savored rather than gulped down. The reading process itself is the goal, and you wouldn’t want to speed through it any more than you’d want to watch a movie in fast-forward mode. But reading to learn is a process to achieve a goal. You need some information, and the sooner you get it, and the less time and effort required, the better.
There may still be times when you want to increase your speed of reading for pleasure. Your reading habits may be too slow even to enjoy pleasure reading. You may have habits of sub-vocalization and regression which interfere with your comprehension of the material. In this case you are not trying to ‘speed read’ but to read competently, so as to enjoy reading. Using ReadSpeeder for pleasure reading is a good way to practice reading by phrases in order to replace these reading habits.
Generally you will find faster reading best suited to material you want to learn. ReadSpeeder is especially helpful for this type of reading. It not only helps you read faster, but the individual phrases makes the material easier to understand. As you instantly grasp each phrase, the thoughts will appear to be pulled from the text, directly into your mind.
